Johanna L. "Joan" Roney, 88, went to be with her heavenly Father on March 14, 2018 in Topeka, KS at Lexington Park Assisted Living. She was born Dec. 10, 1929 in Pomona, KS, the daughter of John and Dorothy Casten. Growing up on a farm near Quenemo, KS, she graduated from Quenemo High School. On April 10, 1949, she married Carl L. Roney. Together they operated a farm near Waverly, KS, where Joan was a farm wife, homemaker, and mother. In 2011, she and her husband moved to Brewster Independent Living in Topeka, where they lived until last year. Joan was a member of the Waverly United Methodist Church. Her interests included raising children, gardening, sewing, reading, square dancing, and traveling. She was a master cook in the kitchen. Her family especially appreciated her rolls and baked goods. She enjoyed church activities, spending time with her family and reading Christian books. She loved visiting with people wherever she went. She took special interest all her life in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. After retiring from the farm, she and Carl spent many winters in southern Texas. Joan is survived by her husband, Carl Roney of Topeka; her two daughters, Cynthia (Lynn) Hultquist of Topeka and Nancy (Rick) Bobbitt of Mesa, AZ; three sons, David (Deborah) Roney of Bakersfield, CA, Daryl (Kris) Roney of Abilene, KS, and Rex (Karen) Roney of Andover, KS; sixteen grandchildren; and nineteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, Jack Casten of Lumberport, WV; Jim Casten of Collinsville, TX; and Jeff Casten of Quenemo, KS. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday April 6, 2018 at the Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene in Topeka. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service, and will continue with a light lunch after the service. All those attending are invited to the lunch. Her ashes will be buried in the Waverly Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Waverly, KS 66871, the Topeka Rescue Mission, or Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene in Topeka.
