Martha Porter, 75, of Miller, S.D., died Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 23 at the First United Methodist Church in Miller with the Rev. David Andrews officiating. Burial was in the G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller, under the direction of Reck Funeral Home.

Casketbearers were Jim Jones, Gordon Gross, Gene Moncur, Mike Mareska, Gordon Slunecka and Terry Howard. Honorary casketbearers were all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends.

Martha Marie Zemina was born October 3, 1931, to Rudolph and Anna (Armfield) Zemina. She grew up in Tyndall, S.D., where she attended high school. In her teens, she moved to Mitchell where she was employed at a laundromat and area restaurants. She moved to Pierre and was employed as a waitress. She met her husband, Norval, there.

On February 23, 1950, Martha married Norval Porter at the United Methodist Church in Miller. Besides being a mother, she worked as a waitress, cleaned homes, painted and wallpapered. They lived in Alden Township, Ree Heights and Alpha Township before moving to Miller in 1970.

Martha enjoyed gardening, baking, fishing, canning, sewing, quilting, playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Greenleaf United Methodist Church where she was involved in the United Methodist Women. She also served as a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher, Head Communion Steward for 20+ years and entered state fair competitions for 29 years in the open class.

Martha's life will be cherished by her three sons, John Porter of Miller, Al (Vanessa) Porter of Huron and Darrel (Jan) Porter of Watertown; three daughters, Maxine (Buell) Maberry of Pierre, Shirley (Brad) Anderson of Jackson, Minn., and Gloria Porter of Miller; 10 grandchildren, Tara (Jason) VanBerkom, Lance Porter, Tyler Porter, Lucas Porter, Jody (Joshua) Sting, Daniel Maberry, Chandra Porter, Nicole Porter, Kate Anderson and Paige Anderson; two great-grandchildren, Nathan VanBerkom and Gavin Schmeling; one sister, Lillie Johnston of Fargo, N.D., and two sisters-in-law, Mavis Zemina and Phyllis Hoeltzner.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Anna Plihal, Rudolph Jr., Frank, William, Marianne, Joseph and Marie; and her husband, Norval Porter.
