Martha Porter, a young girl who died in 1875, was originally laid to rest in this area by her parents. When the infant of another family in the community died, this family laid their baby to rest with the Porter child. The infant was Arthur E. Clester, who passed away 06 Feb 1879 in Zyba at the age of 11 months and 7 days.
It was then Mr. Porter designated this area to be used as a cemetery. It was originally named Prairie Hill Cemetery, but the name was later changed to Porter Cemetery in honor of the family who donated the land.
