Edmond Lynn Alley, M.D., passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on November 2, 2015 at the age of 86. He was the youngest of four children, born at home in Church Hill, TN, to Jesse Clyde Alley and Grace Wallace Alley.

Ed graduated from Church Hill High School in 1947 and completed his pre-medical studies at Emory & Henry College in 1951 where he was a member of the football team and went by the nickname "Church Hill." He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis in 1955 and was a member of the Phi Rho Sigma medical fraternity. After a year's internship at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, he completed a year of surgical residency at the VA hospital in Memphis.

He served as a Captain in the medical division of the U.S. Air Force from 1957 – 1959. He completed a residency in anesthesiology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta in 1961 after which, he returned home to Tennessee. Ed entered into practice at Holston Valley Community Hospital as the first board-certified anesthesiologist there, and was a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiology. He retired from practice in 1997 to devote more time to his family and to pursue his favorite passions. He was an avid bicyclist and snow skier. Ed was a faithful member of Mafair United Methodist Church where he served in many areas of ministry in the church.

In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his sister, Geraldine Alley Meyung; brothers, Jesse Clyde Alley, Jr., and Wallace D. Alley, Sr.; his sisters-in-law, Delores Alley and Billie A. Alley; and his brother-in-law, James R. Jessup.

Ed is survived by his wife of 61 years, Vashti "Ti" Alley; three sons and their wives: Edmond and Kelly, Robert and Mary Jane, and Mark and Helen; his grandchildren: Jesse and wife, Rebecca, Mikey, Drew, Billy, Rachel, Peter, and Connor; brothers-in-law, Bradley Jessup and Eugene "Jeep" Meyung; sister-in-law, Virginia Alley; and numerous nephews and nieces.

The family would like to thank caregivers, Linda, Chandler and Conrad, as well as the staff of Smokey Mountain Health & Hospice for their caring and dedicated service.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Mafair United Methodist Church, 1409 East Center St., Kingsport, TN, 37664. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm with Rev. Kimberly M. Goddard officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Kingsport.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be the physician members of R.O.D.E.O.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Mafair United Methodist Church, or to Emory & Henry College, P.O. Box 950, Emory, VA 24327.
