He was a Reverend, ordained by the Baptist church. He and his son-in-law, Stephen Morse, came from Otsego county and built the first log cabin in what is now the town of Parish, who settled in 1803. He had been there to scout a homestead in 1802.

He was the first minister of the Colosse Baptist church, where he is buried.

Plans are being made by the Silas Town Chapter DAR to mark the grave of Rev Gamaliel Barnes, a soldier in the Revolutionary war, who is buried in the Colosse cemetery. He was a long time resident of this area, the founder of the Colosse Baptist church.
