He was a descendent of John Counts of Glade Hollow from his mother, Mary Rasnick, who is the daughter of Jonas and Rachel Laforce Rasnick, who was the son of Jacob Rasnick and Mary Counts, who was the daughter of John and Mary Counts of Glade Hollow.

Married first wife Emeline "Emma" Sutherland on 5/23/1884 in Dickenson County. They lived on a farm on Lick Creek.

He was the first postmaster at Nancy; he was a supervisor for the Sandlick District 1920 to 1924.

On 5/27/1923, in Dickenson County, he married Nancy Counts Anderson (E679) in the Sutherland book. He and Nancy had no children.

Children of Jessie's and Emeline's:
Lydia Ellen, Chloe, Bertha, Mary "Mollie" Elizabeth, Lawrence Grayson, Richard Stacy, and Clara Jane.

The following memory is recounted by their granddaughter, Sena Edwards Smith:

"Jesse taught school for several years. He was supervisor for a long period of time. He was also the first postmaster at Nancy Virginia. He had a grist mill run by water. People would bring corn to be ground into meal. He would take 1 gallon of corn from each bushel for toll which kept them in cornmeal most the time. He also raised sheep and sold the wool to help pay for their clothing.

"Emma was sick a number of years before her death. Clara, their daughter, was only three years old when her mother died. The older daughters didn't get to go to school regular as they took turns staying home a day or so each week to take care of three-year-old Clara until she was old enough to go to school.

"Jesse was a wonderful father. He was both father and mother after Emma died. He was set around the fireplace each night and help the children with their homework, and when that was finished, they would sing a religious song or two before going to bed. Amazing Grace was his favorite. After all his children were married, he later married Nancy Anderson. They had no children. "

Csuse of death: Chronic Parenchymatous Nephritis. - The disease is most frequently seen in children and young adults. It may follow general infective diseases such as scarlet fever, erysipelas and septic sore throat, and is seen in those with large tonsils or some other septic focus in the naso-pharynx.
