Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. A noted breeder of livestock in Virginia, he was elected to the House of Delegates, where he served from 1852 until 1854. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was appointed a brigadier general to command the 7th Brigade, 3rd Division of the Virginia Militia. After service around Winchester, Bath, and Romney, he was called upon to help guard the rear of Stonewall Jackson's army during Sheridan's Shenandoah campaign. He resigned his general's commission in February of 1862. His resignation may have been the result of pressure from above after suggestions that he was an alcoholic. In 1892, he sold his property in Virginia and re-located to Seattle, Washington where he was appointed U.S. Postmaster by President Cleveland.
