Col. Lyon W. Brandon, 84, resident of 4001 Cabell Lane, died early Friday at Veterans Hospital after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Andrews Episcopal Cathedral with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation at Wright and Ferguson after 4 p.m.

He is survived by his wife, the former Catherine Sledge of Como; two daughters, Mrs. Francis Herbert of San Saulo, Brazil and Mrs. James W. Williams of Jackson; a sister, Mrs. William Cockrill of Nashville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Col. Brandon was a native of Murphreesboro, Tenn., and received his law degree from Cumberland University. He was a veteran of World War I. He practiced law in Murphreesboro until 1923 and later operated family plantations in Tunica and Quitman counties. Hie entered social work as veterans' employment representative for Mississippi in the U.S. Department of Labor and served later as regional director and as staff representative of the U.S. Veterans' Employment Service. He retired in 1965 with 31 years of service.

He served as national vice-commander of the American Legion and as state commander. He was a sponsor and writer of the G.I. Bill of Rights. He also served as National Vice-Commander of the Forty & Eight Legion organization.

He was an organizer of the Goodwill Industries of Mississippi and a member of its board of directors. He served as Junior Warden of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Como.

He was a member of the Jackson Rotary Club, the Newcomen Society, the Capital City Petroleum Club and the Post Mortem Club of Washington.
