REV. F. DEAN CAVIN
July 11, 2019

Reverend Dean Cavin, 89, went to be with his Heavenly Father at 2:36 p.m., on July 11, 2019 at Pine Village in Moundridge, Kansas. Dean, Pastor, Dad or Grandpa as he was known to his family and friends was born on January 31, 1930 to William Alvin Cavin and Zelma May (Cook) Cavin in Sawyer, Kansas.

He lived in Isabel, Kansas and went to the Isabel school through the 8th grade, moving then to Medicine Lodge, Kansas. He spent all of his growing up years in Barber County.

At the age of 19, he went to work for National Gypsum Company in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. This was a memorable year for Dean, on December 1, 1949, he married his lifetime partner, Mrs Cavin, from Attica, Kansas at the First Baptist Church in Medicine Lodge, Kansas, in the old building, prior to a fire. Dean was 19 years old and his wife was 20 years old. Dean not only married an older woman by 9 months, but in those days, he was too young to get married without a parent's consent, so his mother had to sign and give permission for them to be married.

Dean was a man of action and let very little grass grow under his feet. He knew he was going to marry his wife after the first time he met her. In fact, he told his mother the night he met her he was going to marry her. This was on 4th of July. After 2 dates, he told his wife he wanted to marry her. Her response was a laugh and to say “Why would I do that? We hardly know each other, I can’t marry a crazy man!” By August though he had changed her mind and they were engaged. This marriage lasted over 69 years and they showed their children and grandchildren that true love can persevere.

After being married Dean and and his wife attended the First Baptist Church of Medicine Lodge, Kansas, where Dean was the song leader and his wife played the piano and they both taught Sunday School classes. They continued to attend church here until September 1950, when they enrolled at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. This was the first year of classes at this college, this college remains open to this day.

Dean preached his first sermon at the age of 14 at the First Baptist Church in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Dean described his first sermon to his wife like this, “I studied for 2 weeks and preached 7 minutes” to which his wife responded, “Now you study 7 minutes and preach 2 weeks.”

Dean pastored his first church at the age of 23 in Oklahoma. His pastoring took him and his family as far away from home as the states of Texas, Washington and Idaho, and as close as Attica, Kansas, which he pastored twice for a total of 17 years and Sun City, Kansas. Small towns and small churches were where he felt most at home – he was a country boy at heart.

He was a pastor for the people, he met the people where they were. While in Sun City, Kansas he and his family became involved in the Saddle Club and began owning and riding horses again. In his younger days he had horses and always loved them. He taught his children how to ride and take care of them. He would help his church members with cattle round-ups. While in Attica, Kansas, it was an expected thing to see him driving a tractor and working the field after wheat harvest for a member of his church. He was happiest working outside and working with his hands.

He leaves his wife of 69 years, his son, his daughter, 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, his sister, and many family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister Alvena McCullough, nephews Patrick McCullough, Michael McCullough and James Winborne.
