Alves was the son of Peter Barneycastle and Margaret Ball/Bale. Margaret's name often looks like Bale, though Ball is correct. Peter died in 1850s, and though he had a farm it seems to have been sold soon after his death. Thus Alves was poor, and he enlisted in Civil War as a substitute for a wealthy man who didn't want to serve. Alves enlisted March 26, 1862, age 18. He was a private in Co K, 48th Regt NC Troops. He fought in Petersburg, Richmond, Gaines Mill. He took part in the Harpers Ferry battle on Sept 15th, then the regiment marched to Maryland, They fought at Sharpsburg where half of the regiment was killed. This is where he was wounded, and he died in the hands of the enemy at Fredrick City, MD. People's Press article says he died of disease. Since Pt Lookout was notoriously overcrowded and unsanitary, likely his wound turned to gangrene. Alves had a brother Franklin and a sister Margaret. Margaret married Patrick McAuley in West Virginia, not sure where Franklin ended up.
