Daily Reporter-Herald, The (Loveland, CO) - Tuesday, July 24, 2012:

Paul Woodland went to meet his creator on July 20, 2012. His passing was exactly nine months after his wife of sixty-nine years, Janett, passed away. Paul was born December 21st, 1920, he was the fifth child born to William and Nellie Woodland in Mokane, Missouri. The family moved to Jefferson City, Missouri shortly after that where Paul received his education. On his first day of Kindergarten Paul met the woman he was destined to spend his life with, Janett Scrivner. Paul married Janett in the First Baptist Church in Jefferson City, Missouri on January 4th, 1942. Paul often said that "Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7th; I married Janett the next month so she would be there when I returned home from the war." Paul served overseas in the Navy throughout the war and received an honorable discharge.

Upon his return he enrolled in Warrensburg University in Columbia, Missouri where he earned his Master Degree in Education Administration. Paul taught school after graduation but was recalled to active duty in the Navy during the Korean conflict. After his service in Korea, he returned to Jefferson City where he became an Elementary School Principal.

Paul was baptized when he was 14 and was a lifelong Baptist, serving in all of the various churches wherever he lived in a variety of ways, including teaching, church planting, and even a short stint preaching. Paul modeled his faith every day; he truly "walked the walk", not just talked the talk.

Paul and Janett moved to Colorado in 1952 where he taught in the Cherry Hills and Westminster School Districts. Paul received recognition several times as a Teacher of the Year while serving in School District 50 in Westminster. In 1958 their son Randy was born, followed by their daughter Janiece in 1960. Paul ran the Leslie S. Deal summer camp for under privileged children, owned by the City of Denver, for several years during the summer break from school. This was only one of many ways Paul gave of his time to better the community.

Paul was also very active in the Masons, serving as both Secretary and Master of the Westminster, Fairplay, and Berthoud, Colorado lodges for many years. Paul was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory, and a life-time member of the VFW. Last year the Colorado Masonic Organization gave him the Lamp Lighter award, a rare life time achievement award.

Upon "retirement" Paul and Janett moved to Fairplay, Colorado, where he served as President of the local School Board, the County Board of Adjustment, President of the Senior Coalition and the South Park Museum Board. After many years in Fairplay, they moved to Loveland, Colorado to escape the harsh mountain winters.

Paul is survived by his son Randy and daughter-in-law Bonnie, his daughter Janiece and her life partner, Tammy. Granddaughter Elizabeth (Chad Walker), grandson Mark, and two great-grandchildren (Bradley and Kinsley).

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Resthaven Funeral Home. Interment Resthaven Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to The Shriner's Hospital or a charity of your choice in care of Resthaven Funeral Home.
