John W Brown was the son of William Brown and Sarah Boutwell. He was a sailor and a captain of various boats on the Great Lakes. He married Martha Raymond (daughter of Racine, Wisconsin hotelkeeper Elisha Raymond). Racine was home for John, but he spent a good deal of time on the lakes, and was particularly active in the area of Grand Traverse Bay in Michigan. In 1855 he purchased 279 acres of public land in Section 24 of Township 31N, R9W - a parcel that would be known as Brownstown for many years, eventually becoming Torch Lake Village. John had ambitions to become a lumber baron but he was better suited to the lakes.

John and Martha had four children: Mary, Martha Frances, William Chester and Grant Raymond. The family moved to Chicago, where the children grew up and John was a well known Lake Captain. They maintained their ties in Wisconsin. Both John and Martha died there (she in Marshfield in 1890, he in Racine in 1893) and both were buried at Oak Woods in Chicago.
