LOGAN JOURNAL--6 July 1892
Casualty at Riverdale
On the morning of the fourth a young son of William Nelson of Riverdale, Idaho, started out in company with other young men in the direction of the meeting house at that place, where they intended taking part in the celebration. They had with them a shotgun which was heavily loaded for the purpose of firing a salute. The young man who had the gun took aim and pulled the trigger--the gun bursted and the pieces flew in every direction. The one who held the gun was upset but not seriously injured. Less fortunate however was young Nelson who was standing in the rear of the gunner. A piece of the barrel about half an inch wide and five inches long struck him in the eye inflicting a painful and serious wound. The eye was torn out, the frontal bone broken and the brain more or less injured. The patient was brought to this city and placed in the care of Dr. Ormsby, who thinks that he may be able to pull him through.

FATAL ACCIDENT--William C. Nelson Killed by a Gun Explosion
Logan Nation, 8th: A very sad fatality overtook William C. Nelson of Riverdale on the morning of the Fourth of July. He was the son of William W. Nelson of that place and grandson of Mr. Samuel Nelson of this city, to whose home the young man was taken , and where he died on Wednesday morning, at 2:30 o'clock, from the fatal injuries.
On the morning of the fourth the young man got up a little before 5 o'clock, in company with Leonidas Meacham, his boon companion, to meet some others at the school house for the purpose of firing a salute.
On the way it was proposed that they fire off a shot. The loads had remained in the gun some weeks and at the first attempt only the cap snapped. Then Leonidas took the gun and after placing on a fresh cap fired, the result being a terrific explosion of both barrels. Leonidas was not hurt, but the deceased, standing some six feet behind and at the time engaged in making a ramrod, was hit under the right eye.
He was able, however, to walk back to the house four or five hundred yards and even crossed on a small pole that was placed over some water. On reaching home he sat down in the door of the granary and there commenced to feel sick, and from that time on he grew worse.
He was brought to Logan on the noon train and taken to his grandfather's house in the Second Ward. Stupors commenced coming on while en route to Logan and they kept getting worse until he could not be aroused from them. He died Wednesday morning at 2:30, the 6th inst.
The cut in the face did not appear to be more than a flesh wound, and at first gave the father no apprehension, but the stupors brought unmistakable signs of the brain having been injured. It is supposed that the cheek bone was broken and pressed into the vital parts of the brain.
It is a very sad fatality, and the parents and relatives of the deceased have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.
