Canton – Sarah Jane Burrell Shipman, 81, of the Thickety Community, passed away on Tuesday, July 09, 2019 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.

A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late Larry and Gladys Murray Burrell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jake Denver Burrell. Jane worked at Haywood County Public Library as a librarian assistant for many years and was a member of Plains United Methodist Church. She enjoyed visiting antique shows and shops as well as spending time making crafts and handmade dolls.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, R. L. Shipman; a daughter, Tammy Shipman of Canton; one son, Larry Shipman and wife, Regina, of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania; a sister-in-law, Ruby Crumpler; three brothers-in-law, Danny Shipman (Kim), James Shipman (Shevondea) and G.L. Shipman (Pat); one grandson, Michael Shipman and wife, Mindy; one step-granddaughter, Gina Jennings; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2019 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Aryn Williams-Ruebel and Reverend Zach Christy officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at their residence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood County Public Library Children’s Department – Canton, 11 Pennsylvania Avenue, Canton, NC 28716 or to Plains United Methodist Church, 2029 Newfound Road, Canton, NC 28716.
