Rita E. Snyder, 81, of Bucyrus died early Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at The James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, succumbing to her third bout with cancer after overcoming two previous diagnoses.

She was born on September 1, 1937 in Eden Twp., Wyandot County to the late Burton and Mary L. (Stevens) Honsberger and raised on the family farm near Benton. She loved sports her entire life and would have been considered an all-star if more athletic opportunities were offered girls when she was attending school. She graduated from Lykens High School in 1955 and married Joseph “Bud” Snyder in February 1958. He preceded her in death on August 17, 2006 shortly after returning to Bucyrus after living 20 years in Nebraska.

Rita worked for General Electric and North Electric before joining the banking profession, working for Farmers Citizens in Bucyrus and retiring from Platte Valley National Bank in Scottsbluff, Neb. She faithfully attended Wayside Chapel and will be remembered for her love of travel and sports, especially college football. Each year she carefully planned a family vacation which eventually took them to all the lower 48 states. When she was engrossed in a sporting event, she wouldn’t shy away from telling visitors to call again later. Since Bud’s death she enjoyed bus trips, especially if the destination was a casino where she could play penny slots and often won. She particularly enjoyed visits with her grandchildren and cherished the camaraderie of her friends in the GriefShare support group.

Rita is survived by daughters, LouAnn (Chad) Cover of Bucyrus and Linda Applegate of Lexington; grandchildren, Clayton Cover, Nicole Cover, and Joseph Applegate; brother, Wesley (Nancy) Honsberger of Upper Sandusky; sister, Patricia (Dave) Jury of Bucyrus; and brother-in-law, Owen Snyder of Indiana. In addition to her parents and husband of 48 years, she was preceded in death by sisters, Clara Jean Snyder and Colleen Seckel and brother, John Honsberger.

Services for Rita will take place at Wayside Chapel in Bucyrus where family will receive friends on Friday, July 5 from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday from 12-12:55 p.m. Her funeral will be on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Tim Compton officiating and burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made payable to OSUCCC-James (James Cancer Hospital) or Wayside Chapel and given at the services or through Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus.
