In 1942, he enlisted and joined the army. After his discharge, he opened a Studebaker dealership. He owned and operated this business until 1952 when he retired.
Emery married June Pearl (Redmond) Danley on 10 Jan 1949 in Minnehaha County, South Dakota. They had no children together, but he helped raise his wife's son Robert Leroy Danley from her previous marriage to Clifford Darold Danley.
