Frank Severance Dies, Banker, Civic Leader


Frank Bridwell Severance, 88, former board chairman of Citizens Savings and Loan Association in Montgomery county, died early yesterday in Gaithersburg* after a lengthy illness.


Mr. Severance, who had been honorary chairman of the firm since his retirement two years ago, was born and educated in Washington, and attended the District of Columbia Business College.


His firm employment was as bookkeeper of the Gaithersburg Milling and Manufacturing Co., in 1896. When the company went out of business after a fire, Mr. Severance turned to banking, and became assistant cashier of the First National Bank of Gaithersburg, now a branch of the Suburban Trust Co. He became cashier of the bank before his retirement in 1936.


In 1929, Mr. Severance joined a group of Montgomery County citizens in organizing Citizens Savings and Loan, and was one of the original members of the board. He became chairman in 1952 at the age of 77.


He served on the Town Council of Gaithersburg from 1924 to 1932, was one of the founders of the Gaithersburg Volunteer Fire Department, was a member of the Montgomery County Historical Society, the Knights of Pythias, Lions Club and had taught a men's Bible class at Epworth Methodist Church.


Mr. Severance leaves a son, Frank A.F., of New Canaan, Conn.; a daughter, Mrs. Katheryne S. Porter, of the home address, 202 South Summit avenue, Gaithersburg, and four grandchildren. Blanche Fulks, whom he married in 1897, died in 1954.


Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Epworth Methodist Church, with burial in Forest Oak Cemetery, Gaithersburg. Friends may call at the home until tomorrow morning.
