She was born as Ruth Arviso, she was a grandaughter of Casuse Arviso, a Navajo of Mixed ancestry whose father came from Spain. Cause served as an interpreter for the Navajos during the infamous "Long Walk".

He was was a descendent of Tom Polacca, a Tewa Indian who was know to have established the "Hope" town of Polacci.
