NELLIE L. WERBER PASSES AWAY AT DOCTORS HOSPITAL OMAHA, NEBRASKA, SATURDAY AFTERNOON
Recent issues of the Leader have stated that Mrs. Nellie L. Werber was in the Doctors hospital at Omaha, Nebraska. For the past several weeks the physicians there held out no hope of her recovery and her death came at 1:20 o'clock Saturday afternoon, May 5, 1945. Sunday morning, May 6, Robert M. Spooner, accompanied by Clyde Harris left here for Omaha to bring back the body. They returned to Sargent about supper time that afternoon. The funeral was held in the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, May 9th. It was directed by both Robert M. Spooner and his father Fay W. Spooner. The religious service was in charge of the Rev. Edward M. Smith, pastor of the church. There was a display of very beautiful flowers. In attendance were some long time friends of Mrs. Werber. They were Mrs. Linda (J.J.) Carroll and brother Glen D. and Mrs. Grace Spacht, and their daughter Mrs. Mildred Giladorf and husband Sgt. E. J. Gilsdorf who came from Franklin, Nebraska, Wednesday forenoon and returned home after the services were over; Also, present was a niece of Mrs. Werbers husband James E, Werber, deceased. She is Mrs. Genevieve (Joe) Meyer of Peoria, Illinois, She is a daughter of Mr. Werbers sister Mrs. Nellie Cramer. Attending in a body were the members of the Sargent Woman's club of which Mrs. Werber had been a member for thirty years or more. The singing was by Mrs. Grace J. (W.,R.) Kidder with Mrs. Eva (Robert G.) Brown at the piano. The songs used were "Abide With Me" and ''Come Ye Disconsolate." Rev. Smith preached the funeral sermon which was based on the twenty-third Psalm. The pallbearers were: George E. Steinhoff, Roy Hicks, Albert Smith, Talmadge Sheldon, George Semler and Bert Amos. Interment was made in the Sargent cemetery. Nellie Laughlin was born in Ottawa, Illinois, April 15, 1876, and passed away at Omaha, Nebraska, May 5th, 1945, at the age of 69 years, and 20 days. When she was about three years old she came to Custer county, Nebraska, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Laughlin who located on land and established their home a mile north and a mile east of Sargent which was not founded until about four years after they located there. She grew up in that home and secured most of her schooling in the Sargent school and then taught school a term or two. On June 15, 1895, she was married to James E. Werber. They lived on her parents farm a few years and then made their home in Sargent which has been her life time home with the exception of two or three years when she and Mr Werber lived at Bradshaw, Nebraska, where Mr. Werber operated an elevator for John H. Currie. Then they moved back to Sargent and she resided here ever since. To Mr. and Mrs. Werber was born one son Fern E. Werber who passed away the summer of 1944 while living in San Pedro, California, where he held a position in the San Pedro post office for a number of years. One grandson James Fern Werber of. San Pedro, California, is the sole survivor.
