William Patrick Nalon / Nailan / Nelon (b. 1809 – d. before 1870) was the s/o Patrick Nailan and 1st wife, Nancy C. Miller/Doughtry?) born in Rutherford Co., NC. He was a Blacksmith by trade along with his two brothers, James and Thomas. At age 22, he enlisted with the Federal Army to assist with the Indian Removal west of the Mississippi. He enlisted on September 8, 1828, for a 5 year term under Capt. Pierce M. Butler and stationed at Fort Smith, Arkansas near the Oklahoma border. His military record showed he was born in Rutherford, North Carolina, a "blacksmith" standing 5'- 6" with black hair, blue eyes and dark complexion. He was discharged on September 8, 1833, after which time he moved down to the river town of Natchitoches, Louisiana where he met his wife. On January 16, 1835, he married Marie Emeline "Meline" Frederic in Natchitoches, Louisiana and they took up residence next to her parents at the Grand Bayou on the Red River of Natchioches. She was the daughter of French Catholics, Phillip Frederic and Marie Rosalie Lastage who were born in Louisiana. In the 1840 Census, Natchitoches, Louisiana, he was noted as "William P. Nalon" (30-39) with a wife (20-29), a son and daughter both under age 5. He was enumerated next door to the Phillip Frederic Sr. family. Marie Emeline died before 1850 as she was gone in Natchitoches, Louisiana Census leaving William "W.P Nailend" alone with 3 daughters, Elizabeth (13), Letitia (10) and Manervy (8), in household #377. The census noted he was as "Blacksmith" and living next door to his aged father in-law Phillip "Frederic" a farmer age 65 and Francios (age 24) in household #376. In the 1860 Natchitoches, Louisiana Census, HH #224, William (age 49) and his daughter Manerva (age 17) were living together and he continued to work as a Blacksmith. A few doors down in HH #229 was his newly wed daughter, Elizabeth age 22, husband John Cason age 22 working as a farm laborer with their 1 year old Sarah and John's brother, Joseph age 20. William Patrick never remarried and died before the 1870 Census and assumed buried in Grand Bayou area near the Red River next to his wife Marie Emeline Frederic. The Red River changed over time due to flooding and thus an Oxbow lake was formed.
