Atkinson ­— Velma Louise Metschke, 87, or Atkinson, formerly of Chambers, died Monday, May 1, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society in Atkinson.

Visitation was held Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill with a prayer service.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 5, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chambers. Rev. John Ryding officiated. Music was provided by organist Darlene Reiner.

Pallbearers were A.J. Owen, Matt Metschke, Robert Denker, Karsen Peterson, Dane Metschke and Montie Metschke.

Honorary pallbearers were Velma's grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Burial was in the Chambers Cemetery in Chambers.

Memorials may be made to the family for future designation.

Velma was born on Dec. 20, 1929 to William and Julia (Dellenburg) Snider in Diagonal, Iowa. She moved with her family to Nebraska and graduated from Ewing High School in 1947.

On Feb. 14, 1950 she married Merle Peterson. To this union six children were born Jim, Jerry, Jackie, Pete, Mike and Joeline. Merle passed away on March 21, 1970.

On June 23, 1973 she married Orville Metschke in O'Neill. They made their home in Chambers. Orville passed away on July 27, 2001.

Velma was active in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and American Legion Auxiliary Post 320. She enjoyed her garden club and card club as well as crocheting. She loved to read and liked spending time tending to her flower garden.

Velma is survived by her six children Jim Peterson of Monte Vista, CO, Jerry (Gerri) Peterson, Jackie Denker, all of Chambers, Pete Peterson of Omaha, Mike (Paquitta) Peterson of La Palma, CA and Joeline Baratta of Ericson; six stepchildren Eugene (Barb) Metschke, Ralph (Georgia) Metschke, Phillip Metschke, Mary Ann Babutzke, Maxine (Jerry) Bennett and Margene Emme; one daughter-in-law Maureen Metschke; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, one sister, three brothers and one son-in-law Don Emme.
