Marjie Catherine Sherrell Grimes passed away Monday, June 18, 2007 at home at the age of 92. She was born November 29, 1914, to Oris and Edwin Sherrell in Denton, Texas. She spent most of her childhood in El Paso, Texas, where she attended school and graduated from El Paso High School. She then continued her education at New Mexico Western College in Silver City, New Mexico and New Mexico A & M in Las Cruces. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at New Mexico A & M. She taught elementary school for one year in Berino and one year in Rincon, New Mexico.
Marjie married Joe L. Grimes from Silver City, NM, in May of 1938 and they settled in Hatch, where Joe was a manager of a variety store. Later, they moved to Socorro, New Mexico, where they began their own variety store business. They lived in Socorro for 30 years where they were in business and raised their family.
In 1969, she moved with her husband, Joe, to Las Cruces after retiring from the variety store business. A short while later, they decided to take up truck farming and were among the original founders of the Farmers Market on the Downtown Mall some thirty-plus years ago. She made many friends at the mall and was greatly missed when at the age of 82, she decided to retire once again. Marjie was preceded in death by her husband, Joe L. Grimes and her son, Joe Grimes, Jr.
She is survived by her daughters: Sherrell Grimes and Marjorie Grimes Sharp and her husband, Jim Sharp; nine grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 22, 2007. Interment will follow at Masonic Cemetery.
