Death Notice:
"Died at Warrenton, Va., October 5th, Lieut. John W. Baird in the 32nd year of his age. He was born and partly raised in Chester District, S. C. His parents moved to Tipton Co., Tenn. where he received his academic education, after which he repaired to Erskine College where he graduated in 1855. He then repaired to Miami University. Ohio, where he prosecuted his studies further, particularly the mathematics, for which he had a great aptitude and taste. Having selected teaching as his profession, he traveled through the North, examining their system with a view of perfecting himself in the theory and practice of profession. On his return South, he taught for some time in Alabama. When elected to take charge of the Male Academy of Chesterville, he returned to his native state, where he had been successfully employed as principal of the above academy until the breaking out of the war. Having married Miss Sarah Simpson of Chesterville, in the meantime, he engaged in his calling with fair prospect of usefulness in that location. But when the young men of our country were summoned to the tented field, he volunteered, and during last spring and summer was in the battle of Manassas. where he was severely wounded in the ankle. Hopes were entertained of his recovery, but typhoid fever supervening, he died on the 5th of October 1862. Lieut. John W. Baird was a Ruling Elder of Union A.R.P. congregation and leaves a wife and two children."
