RUN DOWN BY TRAIN.
Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Monarch, Former Residents of This Vicinity Killed at Kansas City Sunday.
Word was received her yesterday morning of the tragic death of Mr. and Mrs. "Dot" Monarch, which occurred at Kansas City late Sunday afternoon. Another couple who were in the same carriage were also killed. Mr. Monarch was a brother of Mrs. Logan Dunham, of this city, and had spent the greater part of his life in Blandinsville, but his frequent visits to LaHarpe gave him considerable acquaintance with our people. He was about 30 years old and his wife, who was also a one time resident of this vicinity, ten years older. Her maiden name was Cora Shaw, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amiziah [sic] Shaw, who live on a farm in the Bedford neighborhood, northeast of LaHarpe.
She was twice married, first to Jarvis Morgan, in 1888, and in July, 1899, he died. An infant daughter May passed away soon after. By this marriage she leaves four children, Beulah and Robert, who live with her parents, and Onie and Cleo, adopted in their infancy by Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Rockwell, of Glendale, Wisconsin. The story of their death as published in yesterday's St. Louis Republic is as follows:
"Four persons in a buggy--two men and two women--were instantly killed late Sunday afternoon at the Fifteenth street crossing of the Chicago & Alton railroad, two miles east of Kansas City, Mo., by the Alton's Red Flyer, west bound [sic] from St. Louis. The dead are: D. C. Monarch and George Henry and their wives. The men were salesmen for local mercantile houses. All the bodies were badly mutilated.
"The trainmen say the carriage drove directly in front of the engine although the electric bell at the crossing had been ringing several minutes.
"The bodies of one man and one woman were picked up by the locomotive pilot and carried some distance. The other two were thrown clear of the track. The horses escaped injury.
"It is supposed the four victims were returning from an Easter picnic in the country."
Mr. Shaw and Miss Beulah Morgan left for Kansas City yesterday noon, and will start back with the remains of Mr. and Mrs. Monarch tonight. The funeral and burial will occur at Blandinsville.
