The couple arrived in Texas on November 28,1846, and settled northwest of Plano as Peters Colonists. In addition to his farming activities, Captain Beverly was a county commissioner from Plano in 1852,1854,and 1856. He also assisted in the development of the courthouse square in McKinney. The Captain and Nancy had nine children including: John, Pernina, James, Mary E, Christopher C, Guilford M., Andrew J., William Allen, and Thomas J. Five of their sons were killed in 1864 as they fought for the Confederacy. They were Thomas, their youngest son, Christopher, Andrew, Guilford, and William Allen. Sorrow reigned over the Beverly household and the community each time a message arrived. Twice word came from returning soldiers who had known their sons on the battlefield. The Beverly's had two sons left: James who followed his father as a farmer, and John, who was a Medodist minister and circuit rider. Both were Peter Colonists. The two daughters married Vances. Pernina married Fountain Vance and Mary married James Vance, each of whom had a half section east of the Beverly's. Captain Beverly's wife Nancy died on 6/16/1851, and was buried on the John Vance farm which was soon to be occupied by Jacob Routh.
