Willa Bernice Frederick, 93, died Nov. 26, 2006 in Ludington, Michigan. She came to serve the world through her father Gordon Artz and her mother Marion Artz on June 16, 1913. She grew up on the banks of Swan Creek in Eden Township as one of two daughters. As was characteristic of the times, she was raised in a rural agrarian setting with cows, chickens, pigs and love. This upbringing instilled in her the understanding of right and wrong and a familiarity with servitude and sacrifice that she carried throughout her life.

In an era when few women pursued work outside of the home, Willa heard and answered her calling as a teacher. After her high school graduation from Scottville High School in 1930, she started her training at the Mason County Normal School. During one of her classroom sessions, a jovial little man came into the school house dressed as Santa Claus. Eager to be Mrs. Claus, Willa married Myron T. Frederick (Jeff) in 1936. She left the school setting for a time to fill the role of a dairyman's wife and to mother their two children, James and Iva. When Jeff got hurt on the farm, Willa went back to school and received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Central Michigan University in 1955. She then went on to teach at Center Riverton School and Scottville School, respectively. She retired in 1975 after having taught for over 31 years.

While her role as a wife ended with the death of Jeff in 1969, her role as a servant to others continued through her involvement at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, her volunteer efforts at the local hospital, the long-term care of her sister, Esther, leading family Christmas cookie escapades ("don't lick your fingers and then put them back in the frosting bowl!"), and touching the lives of those around her.

Throughout her life, Willa enjoyed watching the birds of the sky. As her spirit now flies free, may it forever be a part of all those who knew and loved her. She met death as she lived: humbly and courageously.

She is being remembered by her son, James (Mildred) Frederick; daughter, Iva (Maurice) Bailey; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral service: 11:00 AM Wednesday, Nov. 29 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Riverton Township-- Rev. Dan Slattery officiated.
