Euphemia Houston was born in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland on the 7th day of July 1857. At the age of six, she came with her parents to Hollywood, Ontario, Canada. She lived there until 1885 when she was 28 years of age. She met Henry Baker and they were married March 11, 1885 in Ontario, Canada. The same year the young couple came to Cavalier County, Easby Township and settled on their homestead about four and one-half miles southwest of Osnabrock, ND. Their first home was a small log house.
They encountered many hardships in their years. There was drought, hail and grasshoppers to destroy their crops. With determination and faith they withstood their trials and built up a beautiful farmstead. They built a new home on the farm in 1908. The many trees Henry planted still stand on the family farm. He took great pride in his trees.
The Bakers had seven children: six daughters and one son. The first born, a daughter Rachel, died at birth. Rose, Mrs. J. N. Campbell, lived at Sanborn; Netta, Mrs. Henry Lundeby, Osnabrock; Eva, Mrs. Fred Hulstrand, Park River; Ida, Mrs. Sam Sonstegaard, Osnabrock; Hazel, Mrs. T. A. Bonhus, Valley City; and the son Clarence Baker, Osnabrock. The family are all deceased.
Henry Baker served Easby Township Precinct as an officer during many terms of the 46 years he resided there. He farmed until his death at the age of 73 years in 1931. His son Clarence also farmed and helped at home. The family were members of the Presbyterian Church in Osnabrock.
Euphemia passed away about 12 o'clock noon February 21, 1931. About 6 o'clock the next day, her daughter, Ida, passed away following the birth of a son. A double funeral was held for mother and daughter and both are buried in Union Cemetery.
