Gary was born August 15, 1937, in Decatur, the son of Melvin and Thelma (Pettyjohn) Akers. He married Dorcas Camden on January 5, 1956, in Decatur. She preceded him in death in 2013.
Surviving are children, Judy Harrington (Cornell) of Edmond, OK; Pat (Bobby) Schuttz (Cornell) of Seal Beach, CA; and Leslie (Rick) Robertson (Akers) of Mt. Zion; two sisters, Sue Tyler (Akers) of MO; and Helen (Bob) Mustell (Akers) of Louisiana, MO; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three daughters, Marla, Peggy, and Dede; a son, Scott; two brothers, Glenn and Bud.
Gary was a longtime member of Life Builders Church in Decatur. He enjoyed woodworking, listening to blue grass music, especially “Kickin Grass”. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mason Point. They also would like to thank his special caregiver, Carol Sphar, for the care and compassion she gave Gary.
A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Point Pleasant Cemetery.
