Ernst W. Althaus, 86 years of age, native and lifelong resident of Smithton, died at the St. Clair County hospital at 6:30 o'clock last night after a lingering illness. He has been a patient at the local hospital for the past six weeks.

Born in Smithton on May 12, 1846, he was a son of the late William and Louisa Althaus, nee Steuernagel. His father was a native of Germany and his mother was born in the Smithton community. Mr. Althaus never married.

He was the last survivor of his family, five brothers and four sisters preceded him in death; there were:

William Althaus, St. Louis, Mo.
Mrs. Catherine Muench, St. Louis, Mo.
John Althaus, Wellington, Kan.

Caroline, wife of Frank Yung, Belleville
Herman Althaus, Roseberg, Ore.

Surviving nephews and nieces of Mr. Althaus who live in and around this city are:

Funeral services were held this afternoon from the Pete Gaerdner Funeral home to Walnut Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Otto F. Pessel, pastor of St. Paul Evangelical Church, officiated.
