Afton, Iowa. Dec 28, 1893

Sunday evening, H. P. Armitage received word that his mother Mrs. J. C. Armitage was dying. He made the long, rough drive to his father's home in Pleasant township that night. His mother quietly breathed her last about nine o'clock that night. The remains were interred in the Lamb cemetery.

Mrs. Armitage was the daughter of Benj. Lamb, the first settler in Pleasant township and one of the earliest in the county. Her home always displayed the free, frank, frontier hospitality, and the writer has many pleasant, boyhood memories of her kindly ways and gentle disposition. Death is a calamity at any time, but more especially at the merry Christmas season is it sad to see a family called upn to mourn the loss of a dearly beloved wife and mother. The aged husband and mourning children have the sympathy of all, and such consolation as humanity can give is tendered our fellow citizen by the people of Afton.
