VIENNA - James Eugene "Gene" Averitt, 63, died at 12:20 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2007, in Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah, Ky.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2007, in Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, with the Rev. Richard Swiney officiating. Burial will be in Berea Cemetery southeast of Vienna. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Prior to his retirement, Gene was employed as a correctional officer at Vienna Correction Center. Formerly, he was employed at Vienna IGA as an assistant manager, and operated Averitt Tree Service for a number of years.

He was a great outdoorsman, and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was born April 30, 1944, in Paducah, the son of William Thomas and Alice (Harris) Averitt.

Survivors include a son, Gene Allen Averitt and his wife, Carla, of Vienna; stepdaughter, Tona Lee Douglas of Olmsted; grandson, James Robert Allen Averitt; six stepgrandchildren, Terry "TJ", Tyler, Jordan, Steven, Ashley and Chasity; sister, Rose Harris of Vienna; four brothers, Earl David Averitt, Charles Averitt, Daniel Averitt and Ed Averitt, all of Vienna; nieces and nephews; and a very special friends, Verla Harner and her family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William B. "Bill" Averitt; and two sisters, Bonnie Streetman and Blanche McBride.
