Elizabeth Nancy Hurst was the daughter of Armstead and Matilda (Faris) Hurst, who came to Missouri from Kentucky in 1842. They initially settled near Salem, in Platte County but after about a year, moved north into Buchanan County where they pre-empted a quarter section of land and built a sprawling farm home. Elizabeth Nancy was the second of their 11 children, of whom 10 lived into adulthood.

Elizabeth Nancy did not marry, and lived with her parents all of her life. It is believed that she went by "Nancy" - which was her paternal grandmother's name (Nancy Staggs Hurst).
