WIDOW OF CELEBRATED LOUISVILLE DOCTOR DIES -- MRS. CARRIE HARTING ABELL, 79, widow of a world renowned Louisville surgeon, died of pneumonia at 1 a.m. yesterday at Sheppard & Enoch Pratt Hospital, Towson, MD. She had been ill many years. Her husband, Dr. Irvin Abell, Sr. died seven years ago while vacationing in Canada. He was president of the American Medical Association in 1938 and 1939, president of the American College of Surgeons in 1946 and 1947, and a recipient of an honary fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons in London, an honor limited to 50 physicians throughout the world. Dr. Abell was the author of 75 articles and a book, "Retrospect of Surgery In Kentucky." (Clock Honors Dr. Abell, Sr.) In 1951, a clock honoring Mrs. Abell's husband was dedicated at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, where he taught for 50 years. This year, it was announced one of the four wings of the proposed Louisville Medical Building at Floyd and Gray will bear Dr. Abell's name. Mrs. Abell was born in Lexington. She was the daughter of William E. Harding, Lexington industrialist, and his wife. She was educated in Canada. (Was Active In Auxiliaries) She was introduced to Dr. Abell by one of her brothers who was attending St. Mary's College, St. Mary's, Ky., where Dr. Abell received his master of arts degree. They were married October 19, 1907, a year before Dr. Abell was made professor of surgery at the University of Louisville. The Abells lived at 1433 S. Third. Mrs. Abell was active in the women's auxiliaries of several medical societies. Survivors are three sons, Dr. Irvin Abell, Jr., president of the Jefferson County Medical Society, William H. Abell, Louisville attorney, and Dr. Spalding Abell, a brother, Joseph E. Harding, Lexington, and six grandchildren. The body will be at Lee E. Cralle Funeral Home, 1330 S. Third, after 3 p.m. tomorrow. The fuineral will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Cathedral of the Assumption, 441 S. Fifth. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
