"James D. Hake, 82, president of a company that transported atomic reactor components to nuclear power plants, died of heart failure Friday at Naples General Hospital in Naples, Fla.
Growing up in West Philadelphia during the Depression, Mr. Hake sold horse manure for fertilizer, delivered groceries, and worked in his father's one-truck hauling business.
He graduated from West Philadelphia High School and was married to Louise "Babs" Braun in 1942. During World War II, he served in the Sea-bees in Africa and Europe and helped move heavy equipment onto beaches during the Normandy Invasion. Upon his discharge, he rejoined his father and brother, Glenn, in the family business, which had expanded to include rigging, hauling, and industrial services for energy companies. After retiring in 1983, he remained on the board of the Hake Group until Matrix Service Co. acquired the company in 2003.
Mr. Hake moved to Florida when he retired. He had previously lived in Media and Lansdowne and was a former member of Lansdowne Borough Council and past president of the Lansdowne Lions Club and a Mason.
He is survived by sons Frank and James; daughters Pamela Hicks, Barbara Bongard and Nancy Harper; and nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be held today at St. John's Episcopal Church in Naples, Fla."
