Researching Esther Reed has proven to be a challenge. I have concluded that she was married three times. She first married George Washington Abel on 4 Jan 1844 in Salamonia, IN. They had seven children: Mary Ellen, William H., Loretta Alice, Martha, Josephine, Oscar Everett, and Albert R. Albert was born in 1863 and his father George died in 1865.

Although I cannot find a marriage record, Esther must have married John Stewart about 1866. In the 1870 census the family consisted of John and Esther Stewart, two of John's sons from a previous marriage, three year old Thomas I. Stewart, eight month old Charles L. Stewart and seven year old Albert R. Abel. John Stewart died in 1871.

On 12 Oct 1873 Daniel Hiester and "Hettie Stewart" were married in Jay County, IN. I have only seen the online marriage records, not the actual license/certificate, but I know that names on these records frequently vary.

In the 1880 census the family consisted of Daniel and Ester Heister, two of Daniel's daughters from a previous marriage, sixteen year old Albert E. Able, twelve year old Thomas I. Stewart and eight year old Ester M. Reed. Albert and Thomas were step-sons and Ester M. was a niece. Despite the discrepancies in names, [the elder] Esther's age and the birthplaces of Esther and her parents convinces me that this was the same Esther Reed who married George W. Abel.

Esther and George W. Abel are buried together.
