John Simpson Mays, the son of William May, married Hannah Redman Redden the daughter of James Redden Reading Redding and Mary Ann Poage. They were married in 1813 Bath County, Virginia.

April 17, 1837, John S. Mays served in first grand jury in Jay County, Indiana. It was the first term of the Circuit Court, held at the house of Henry H. Cuppy.
