Ratliff City - HAZEL LURINDA WHITLEY WINTER, 97, of Ratliff City, died Friday, June 16, 2007, in her home.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Pernell Church of Christ, with her grandsons, Billy Martin, Chris Winter and Doug Williams, officiating. Burial will be in Tussy Cemetery under direction of Alexander Funeral Home of Ratliff City.
She was born Feb. 1, 1910, in Ardmore, to Lula Bell Gabriel Whitley Scott. She and C.T. "John" Winter were married Feb. 27, 1925, in Ringling. They raised three sons and a daughter together.
Although she was of striking physical beauty, Hazel's real splendor was measured from within. Adored by her family for her great spirit, uncomplaining nature and kindness to others, she was indeed the "Blueprint for Humanity."
Her talent for gardening was displayed in the myriad of colors in the flower beds surrounding her house. Although, she had difficulty walking due to health problems, every year she had an enviable vegetable garden and, true to her generosity, shared its bounty to all who came to see her. Her food preparation skills were rivaled by none. She was well-known for her coconut pies, which she generously prepared, and were enjoyed throughout the community. The jars of homemade pickles canned from her garden were coveted by her family and friends.
She was an excellent seamstress and her perfection in crocheting was demonstrated in doilies she made for her family. She enjoyed bird watching and each year wondered if "the purple martins would return." She loved to fish and would sit on the bank of Wildhorse Creek or a tank dam for hours. Her manner of dress consisted of any piece of clothing that had sequins, rhinestones or glitter, and especially if it was of the color purple.
Her family will miss her every day for the rest of their lives.
Survivors include a daughter, Maxine Hawkins and husband Al of Willowpark, Texas; two sons, Bennie Winter and wife Joy of Ardmore, and Wally Winter of Ratliff City. Seven grandchildren, Maxie, Marsha, Schahara, Scheryl, Scharmagne, Chris and Schaunon, had the distinct privilege and honor of calling her Mema. There are also 15 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and the most wonderful friends anyone could ever hope to have, the Tivis family of Ratliff City.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Chad; her mother; three sisters; two brothers; and three precious uncles who helped raise her, Uncle Troy, Uncle Shorty and Uncle Fester.
Bearers will be Darryl, Kenneth, Dale Tivis and Kent, Brent Perkins, Doug Williams and Zack Williams.
