Wife of Julian "Jule" Pickens Bland of Johnston, SC. Mother of Katherine Bland Sawyer of Columbia, SC, and Lt. Col. Ret., USAF, Julian Pickens Bland, Jr, of Lexington, SC. Grandmother of Louis Shelton Sawyer, III of Atlanta, GA, Katherine Sawyer Bailey of Spartanburg, SC, Julian Pickens Bland, III, of Duncan, SC, and Marian Russell Bland, of Denver, CO. Great-grandmother of Elizabeth Jeffries Cooner, Sarah Katherine Cooner, and William Shelton Cooner of Spartanburg, SC, and Julian Pickens Bland, IV and Joshua Bland of Duncan, SC.

Mrs. Bland, called Snow by family and friends, was a retired school teacher from Edgefield County, SC. Her most famous student was Senator Strom Thurman, U.S. Senator from SC, whom she taught US History. Until her death in 1993, Strom came to visit "Miss Snow" every time he was in town. Snow lived until the age of 98 when she died peacefully of natural causes with her children at her bedside. She was the last survivor of 12 children. All the older siblings were brothers with one younger sister, Rose Jeffries Hart.

Rocking on the front porch is a Southern tradition Mima lived every day. She sat on her porch and spent many happy hours visiting with friends and neighbors who came along. If she was not on the porch, she was cooking or cleaning. As a child, her porch was tremendous to me, but no matter the size, I formed lifelong memories while playing there. Mima lived independently until she fell at age 88, but unscathed, she lived another ten years in our house in Columbia, SC.

Mima made an excellent cornbread dressing, which we have been unable to replicate since her death!
