The son of Daniel & Lydia (Myers) Brown, in 1860 he was a millwright living in Washington Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had light hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty in York September 24, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 26 as a private with Co. I, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pennsylvania), but deserted from Camp Distribution, Virginia, to date July 9, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty [sic] in Mechanicsburg August 20, 1864, mustered into federal service in Harrisburg August 26 as a private with Co. E, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865.

He married Maria W. Hoopes and fathered William H. (b. 06/06/65), Reuben (b. 10/12/68), and Daniel (b. 02/19/74). In 1880, he was living in West Manchester Township, York County, and in 1890, in York, York County, where he died from "organic heart disease & mitral insufficiency" at the reported age of 65-0-19.
