E. O. Bergeson died in Ohio; rites today
Erasmus O. Bergeson, 85, resident of this community for over 65 years, passed away in Cleveland, O., at the home of his daughter on Monday morning February 27, 1939 at 8:15 following a short illness.
He was born near Stavanger, Norway, November 5th, 1853 and came to this country in a sailing vessel at the age of three. He was the second son of Ole Bergeson and Rachel Rundestad who pioneered in the vicinity of Baker on the farm now owned by the Farleys. He spent his early childhood there and was educated at the Bergeson School and received his religious training in the Baker Lutheran Lutheran Church. On May 6th, 1928, he became a member of the Earlville Presbyterian Church.
He was married at Ottawa on January 6th, 1881, to Dorothea J. Knutson, who passed away on March 12th, 1923. In their early married life, they moved to a farm near Aurora, Nebraska. After several years they returned to Illinois, buying the farm north of Earlville where the family lived for 42 years.
Seven Children.
To this union seven children were born: John who died in infancy, and the six who survive their father: Otis of Chicago, Mrs. Ruby Dorothea Crawford of Wollaston, Mass., Melvin of Ashton, Ernest of Knoxville, Mrs. Myrtle Modes of Glendale, Calif., and Mrs. Walton Jacobsen of Cleveland, Ohio. 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, a half brother Edward Bergeson of Swea City, Ia., and three half-sisters, Julia, Rachel, and Josephine, living in Iowa also mourn his loss.
Forty-two years on the farm brought him into the active life of the community. In addition to working his land and rearing and educating his children, he served as school director for years, helped to organize and served as treasurer of the Earlville Farmers Elevator company and was always interested in local political affairs and community progress.
85 Years Old.
Following the death of his wife in 1923, he divided his time between his children. He was 85 years, 3 months and 22 days at the time of his passing.
Friends and family gathered at the Earlville Presbyterian Church Thursday, February 23rd, at 2 p.m. to honor his memory. Rev. Frank F. Fitch conducted the services. Pall bearers were the three sons, Otis, Melvin and Ernest and Andrew Wold, Ezra Kuntz and Carl Pierce. Burial was in Precinct Cemetery. Many from out-of-town attended the services.
