Janet "Jan" L. Buchan, 77, of Waterloo, died Saturday, May 18, 2019 at home.

She was born April 10, 1942, in Waterloo, daughter of Henry F. and Clara R. (Sommerfelt) Heideman.

Janet married Vernon D. Buchan December 10, 1960 at First Lutheran Church in Waterloo.

She spent most of working years in retail. Her first job was working as an elevator operator at JC Penney. She also worked at the Starlight Drive-In, Brownies Food Locker, Ben Franklin, and retired from Wal-Mart.

She enjoyed helping others and wanted people to feel welcomed and valued. She enjoyed crafting, sewing, reading, and watching romance movies.

She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Jan is survived by her husband, Vernon Buchan of Waterloo; two daughters, Denise (Steven) Spleas of Waukesha, WI, and Terri Packingham of Waterloo; son, Daniel Buchan of Waterloo; two sisters, Mary Lou McCalley of Waterloo, and Marie Brock of Sumner, WA; brother James Heideman of Grundy Center; three grandchildren, Rebecca (Richard) Potts, Joshua Spleas, and Dominic Packingham. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Richard Heideman.
