The three men each rented a farm on a prairie located on the west side of the Brazos River. There they made crops in 1874 and 1875. Stephen did not like living in this area. After the crops were up and growing, he and son James Caswell rode horseback to East Texas looking for a better place to live. He tentatively bought a farm in Anderson County. After the crops were sold in 1875, Stephen and his sons James Caswell, Stephen Thomas and George Marion moved by wagons and teams to Anderson County, Texas, where Stephen remained the rest of his life. He is buried in the Crawford Cemetery, located across the road from his original property. His wife Parizade is buried at his side.
