This is a cenotaph — a monument erected in honor of a person whose remains lie elsewhere.
The original plan must have been for Carrie to be buried beside Amos and her infant son when she too passed. However, she was instead buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll next to her second husband. See Find A Grave Memorial 70608563 for Carrie Eisenbise Bissikumer.
This duplicate memorial is established to help avoid any confusion over Carrie's burial place, and to provide additional information about her life and family.
***
Carrie was born in July of 1881 in rural Carroll County, Illinois. She was the daughter of William H. Eisenbise (1849-1929) and Margaret (Myers) Eisenbise.
CARRIE'S PARENTS
William H. Eisenbise was born in Elkhart County, Indiana, on August 27, 1849, the son Peter Eisenbise and Julia Ann (Elder) Rutan Eisenbise. William was baptized in the United Church of the Brethren — three hundred years ago, the first Brethren chose adult baptism — in 1866. He became an elder and minister of the Brethren church's Arnold's Grove and Yellow Creek congregations, preaching a reported 169 funerals. William, Peter, and Julia Ann are all buried at Arnold's Grove Cemetery.
On June 28, 1869, William married Margaret Myers — the 21-year-old daughter born to Paul Myers and Esther (Iler) Myers who was born in Freedom Township, Carroll County, Illinois, on November 6, 1848.
William and Margaret had at least three children together in Carroll County: Ina in 1873; Allan in 1875; and Carrie in 1881. Margaret, Ina, and Allan are all buried at Arnold's Grove as well.
CARRIE'S ADULTHOOD
Carrie first married Amos Walter Zillhart in 1910. Amos was a native of Carroll County, Illinois, and the son of John H. Zillhart and Ellen Elizabeth (Nipe) Zillhart, both Maryland natives. Amos was 17 years Carrie's senior when they married.
Carrie and Amos had two children together. A son was born on January 31, 1920, but he died the same day. Margaret Ellen was born in 1922, and she would live until 1972.
Amos died on February 21, 1923 at the age of 58. Carrie buried Amos at Arnold's Grove Cemetery next to their deceased son. A large headstone was erected for father and son, and it saved a place for Carrie when her time came.
Carrie next married William G. Bissikumer on November 4, 1923. William's parents were German immigrants Ulrich Bissikumer (1835-1915) and Catherine (Rauser) Bissikumer (1834-1918).
Carrie and William were members of the Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren — the old Arnold's Grove church having been razed in 1914 after so many members had died or moved away.
Carrie and William had one daughter, Mary Virginia, who was born May 24, 1924 in Savanna, Carroll County, Illinois. Mary Virginia taught in a one-room schoolhouse in her youth, then returned to teaching in 1971 after her own grown children left home.
William G. Bissikumer died in the Savanna hospital on December 5, 1963 after a short illness. Carrie soon followed William in death, passing on December 30, 1963 in her home in Mount Carroll. William was 86; Carrie was 82. They had been married 40 years.
Notwithstanding the gravestone long awaiting her at Arnold's Grove Cemetery, Carrie was buried with William at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll. Funeral services were by Edwin Rodabaugh, pastor of Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren.
