James was born to Edgar V. and Lola Burke Hogston on the 22 of October 1954 in Virgie, Pike, Kentucky USA.

He is the oldest son and second oldest child of this couple. There are a total of six children, four girls, and two boys.

As a very young child, his family moved to Van Buren Township, Wayne, Michigan. Edgar took a job at the Willow Run plant working for General Motors.

In the following years, the family moved many times, all within Wayne Co. James attended 8 schools finally graduating from Wayne Memorial High School in Wayne, Wayne, Michigan. He was among the graduating class of 1973.

Shortly after graduation he too secured a job at Hydramtic at Willow Run where he worked for 31 years, retiring at age 51.

He married on 18 September 1976 to Julia McCartney at the Old Regular Baptist Church in Ypsilanti, Washtenaw, Michigan.

They have four children. Two boys and two girls all living in Michigan.

James was an avid car enthusiast, family mechanic, and he loved to talk about cars.
