Information from a interview of
"Pop" Bang can be described as devoted husband, a good father, a shrewd businessman, and a staunch member of the Mormon Church.
He attended school to the 4th grade, when he was 14, he quit. He wanted to work and help support the family, since his fathers death when he was 4. He first went to work at the Doerr Tailor Shop earning $1.50 a week as an errand boy. He worked there 6 months, then a customer of the store got him a job in at Wrought Iron Works, punching a press for $3.00 a week. Next he worked for the Lakeshore and Lehigh Valley R.R. in their office. He never kept a penny for himself, but always took everything home to his widowed mother. Next he worked for the Big Four R.R. and received $12.00 a week. He worked at the Big Four until he was just past 16 years. Then got a job selling notions and toys for the Eckert Co. He walked all over Cincinnati selling his line. He loved selling, and decided to make it his career even though at first he made only $9.00 a week, and he still worked at the R.R. Then he went up the street six blocks to Hank Bros. to ask for a job, a friend told him he had seen an ad in the paper asking for a salesman. The owner was a real scrutinizing man, he said to him in his heavy German accent "You come in on Wednesday, and the ad was in on Sunday? I've had 200 men in here for that job you'd better go home". I said, "Mr. Hank I don't care if you have had 200 men ask for the job, obviously it has not been filled yet, and that is the job I am after". Before I got home that day there was a letter from Mr. Hank telling me to come back to work. I could see where the profits were in business so I soon decided to go into business for myself selling candy. My brother Henry's wife worked at the Putman Candy Co. as a chocolate dipper, one of her co-workers was Rosa Kieffer. She lived 3 oe 4 blocks from himand they soon started dating. Rosa & I were married in 1906 and Rosa started helping me sell candy. I rented a store at 1431 Scyamore St. and called it "Bangs Confectionery" I soon turned this store over to my mother to run so she's have means of support, she ran this store for many years while I returned to the wholesale business for, 3 years. I bought a wagon and one horse for a delivery truck about 1910. We'd go to the jobbing house, load up our wagon, and then deliver candy all over the city.
Gradually I went into the grocery business, and the General Store business. The grocery store was on the corner of Dorchester and North Main. We ran this store for 29 years, all my children helped in the store. We had two rooms, one was 22 x 40, feet, and the other 20 x 60, feet. One year we sold 600 house-dresses. The store was sold in 1945.
My 10 children with their birth dates are as follows: 1: Christian March 10, 1909 2: Elizabeth June 24, 1911 3: Henry May 4, 1913 4: Judith March 24, 1915 5: Rosa February 28, 1917 6: Paul March 12, 1919 7: Louis January 3, 1921 8: Evelyn September 12, 1922 9: Victor May 18, 1924 10: Samuel December 13, 1926.
On our 50 wedding anniversary, June 3, 1958, my 9 children, 39 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren, brother Henry, and sister Dora, gathered at the new chapel in Cincinnati to celebrate with us. We received many wonderful gifts, my brother Henry gave me fifty one-half dollars wrapped in gold foil.
Christian & Rosa were very faithful workers in the Morman church.
