David Carothers Allison, 80, died on Wednesday November 9, 2011 at the Knox County Nursing Home.
He was born in Monmouth, Illinois on February 25, 1931, the son of Fred and Dorothy (Rankin) Allison. He married Joyce Keating on June 16, 1954 in Monmouth, Illinois. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons Stuart (and Holly Whittet-Allison) Allison of Galesburg and Bill Allison of Phoenix, Arizona, one daughter Marjorie (and Dan Barclay) Allison of Macomb and four granddaughters Gillian and Gwendolyn Allison of Galesburg and Clara and Sylvia Barclay of Macomb. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers Stuart and Richard.
David grew up in Monmouth, graduating from Monmouth High School in 1949. He enrolled at Monmouth College as a member of the class of 1953. He enlisted in the US Coast Guard during the Korean War and proudly served his country, spending most of his time on destroyer escorts patrolling the north Pacific. After he was honorably discharged, he returned home to marry his high school sweetheart Joyce. They then moved to Champaign-Urbana where David completed his bachelors degree in 1956 and earned a masters degree in 1957 at the University of Illinois. He earned a Ph.D. in agronomy at the Pennsylvania State University, graduating in 1960. He worked briefly as a research scientist at the University of Arizona.
In 1962 David returned to Monmouth to teach at Monmouth College. He taught there until he retired in 1996, specializing in botany and genetics but also teaching many other courses in biology and participated in the college seminar program. He was the chair of the Biology Department for many years. He was extremely proud of Monmouth College and devoted his adult life to serving the needs of the students and college as a whole. For himself, he was especially proud of serving as the College Marshall for over 20 years and of earning the rank of full professor. After retirement he continued to maintain the Monmouth College Ecological Field Station on the banks of the Mississippi River near Keithsburg. He received several honors for his service to the college including having the herbarium named the David Allison Herbarium, a Monmouth College Distinguished Service Award and was inducted to the M Club Hall of Fame, not for his athletic prowess, but for his many years of announcing the Monmouth College basketball games and filming the college football games.
David was also an active member of the Monmouth community. He was on the board of directors of the Warren Achievement Center for many years, including a term as its chair. He was an elder several times at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth. He gladly served on the board of directors of the United Presbyterian Retirement Home in Washington, Iowa. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Midwest Bank of Western Illinois.
After retirement David and Joyce frequently traveled both within the US and internationally. They spent part of every winter with their son Bill in Phoenix. But for David the center of the universe was always Monmouth, Illinois and nothing made him happier than being at home surrounded by family. He was extremely proud of his family and devoted his retirement years to spending time with them.

Services: Cremation rites have been accorded. The family is planning a public memorial service which will be held at Monmouth College on a date to be announced in the future. Memorial gifts in his name may be made to Monmouth College.
