PISECO, HAMILTON Co., NY - Mrs. Julia Adella (Burton) Preston, ( 73y ) d: October 26, 1969 - was born March 10, 1896 in Piseco, NY. As a young teenager her father taught her how to shoot a .22 caliber rifle and she became a good hunter. Although this was uncommon for a girl, Julia had to help out with hunting so that her family could eat. She spent most of her time outdoors observing nature and hunting. Julia at age 16 married a guide, Charlie W. Preston, and they spent their time hunting and hiking. Julia started guiding groups of hunters in 1914 and is reported to be the first women licensed as a guide in New York State (Lynn and Weber 106). The hunters were mostly men and they always questioned her ability to be a guide, but Julia’s experience growing up in the woods allowed her to become an excellent guide. She once helped find a man who got lost in the woods, but the man was so embarrassed to be rescued by a woman that it took her a while to convince him to follow her back to camp. Julia and her husband bought a Millhouse near Piseco Lake and built a small store and gas station. Julia helped with the logging that occurred on the Millhouse. A women logging during the 1930s is almost unheard of, but growing up in the Adirondacks allowed her to learn many skills. Julia was also known for her other talents such as painting, cooking, fishing, and crafting. jar END:
