James is the son of Joseph R. Gentry and Mary Elizabeth Langley Gentry. His father, Joseph R. Gentry, fought in the Civil War in Capt. Blalock's Co., Lt. Col. Morrison's Batt'n, Georgia Calvary. His father was captured at Jacksboro, TN on Aug. 27, 1863 and was held in the Louisville Military Prison, Camp Chase, OH and Rock Island Barracks, IL until 1865, when he was transferred for exchange.

James Wyatt married Sarah Ann Shelnut in 1869.
