James “Jimmy” Merland Wilkerson, Sr. died November 16, 2018 at Kindred Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida. He was born to the late Walter and Irene (Poindexter) Wilkerson.
He came to Okeechobee from about the age of 8 from Jesup, GA. He loved to play poker, read Louis L’Amour books, solving crossword puzzles, throwing Miami Dolphins’ parties, Florida Marlins, fishing, boating, gardening, singing, playing music, riding ATV’s and spending as much time as he could with family and friends. He was the “Life of the Party” and had a great sense of humor.
He proudly served his country in the US Army. He was a paratrooper with the 173rd Airborne and and was a Vietnam Veteran.
He worked 20 years traveling to Hutchison Island Power Plant where he was a heavy equipment operator.
In life he had many battles with illnesses stemming from Agent Orange and most recently with cancer. He won his war and his reward was receiving his Angel wings while surrounded by family and the wonderful caring staff at Kindred Hospital in West Palm Beach, FL.
He was proceeded in death by both parents, brothers Jerry Wilkerson, Laverne Wilkerson, sisters Delores Gail Wilkerson and Betty Jean Wilkerson Black.
Survivors include his ex-wife, Marilyn Prescott Wilkerson, and mother of his oldest children Missy Jones (Chris), James “Jamie” Wilkerson, Jr. (Jeanne), Jeneane Wilkerson Rhuda (Ricky), Orrin Wilkerson, Sr. (Beverly). He spent the last 28 years with his significant other Geraldine Aldridge Bertram and together shared a son Vance Wilkerson (Mckenzie), they also had a blended family that included Kimberly Bertram Fralix (Troy) and Anthony Bertram (Michelle) all of Okeechobee.
Grandchildren are Christie and Brittany Jones, Carlee Brown, Justin Nelson, Emma and Zeb Wilkerson, Lane Rhuda and Sierra Rhuda, Madilyn and Orrin Wilkerson, Jr., Evelyn Christine Wilkerson, Audrey and Kevin Bertram and Samantha “Sambo” Fralix.
Eight great grandchildren, Waylon, Stetson, Blayne, Beau, Eli, Hayden, Alayah, Alaina, brother Wayne Wilkerson (Betty) and sister Sherry Wilkerson Houlette (Fred). Countless nieces, nephews and friends. Acknowledgement of Tammy, Lesley, Ricky, Reba, Bobby, Sidney and Diane and also Boots and Diane
His beloved dog Girly girl AKA Julie AKA Puppy. He called her all these names and she answered to him no matter what he called her. They had a very special bond.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Evergreen Cemetery.
