Jim was a 1943 graduate of Paschal High School in Fort Worth. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944, serving as a Torpedo Mate 3rd class at Pearl Harbor during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1946. He graduated with a B.A. degree in economics from the University of Texas at Austin, in 1950.
